An AWB (Airway Bill) is a unique alphanumeric tracking identifier and contract of carriage issued by courier companies (Delhivery, Bluedart, Xpressbees, Shadowfax). Printed as a scannable 1D/2D barcode on the exterior shipping label, the AWB records crucial transit data including origin warehouse pincode, destination customer address, dead weight, volumetric weight, declared value, and Cash on Delivery (COD) collectable amounts. It provides live real-time milestone tracking for both merchant and consumer.
The Lifecycle of an AWB in Automated Fulfillment
The moment an apparel order is packed at the fulfillment factory, an automated API call is dispatched to the courier aggregation engine. The engine selects the fastest, cheapest courier servicing the destination pincode and assigns an AWB number.
A thermal shipping label is printed and adhered to the polybag. As the parcel moves through sorting hubs, conveyor barcode scanners register scans that ping status updates back to the customer’s WhatsApp and SMS.
