Key Definition & Direct Answer

DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing uses specialized textile inkjet engines to spray water-based CMYK and white inks directly onto cotton fabric fibers. While popular for complex multi-color designs on light cotton, DTG requires liquid pre-treatment, struggles with dark polyester blends, and is increasingly superseded in high-durability apparel by Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing.

DTG vs. Modern DTF Printing

DTG pioneered on-demand printing but has significant limitations: if the pre-treatment chemical is unevenly sprayed, the white ink flakes off in the wash. Furthermore, DTG cannot print on fleece hoodies or synthetic polyester.

DTF solves this by printing on transfer film with hot-melt TPU adhesive, delivering superior color opacity and universal fabric compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DTG better than DTF for t-shirts?

DTG offers a slightly softer hand-feel on light cotton, but DTF provides vastly superior color vibrancy on dark shirts, zero pre-treatment stains, and twice the wash durability on heavyweight fabrics.
