Discharge printing is a master-level screen printing process engineered specifically for dark 100% cotton garments. The ink contains a chemical discharge activator (Zinc Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate or ZFS). When heated to 175°C in the conveyor tunnel, the activator destroys the reactive dye bonds in the cotton yarn, discharging the fabric back to its raw natural ecru shade while simultaneously re-dyeing the yarn with the desired graphic color. The result is an ultra-vibrant print on black fabric with 100% zero rubbery hand-feel.
The Chemical Reaction of Dye Discharge
Printing vibrant colors on black t-shirts has historically required laying down a heavy, thick armor of white plastisol ink underbase. This creates a hot, sweat-inducing "sweat patch" on the wearer's chest.
Discharge printing eliminates the underbase entirely. The chemical activator in the ink attacks the azo-dye molecules chemically bonded to the cotton cellulose. As the garment passes through the 175°C dryer, steam releases and the black dye turns off. The color pigment in the discharge slurry instantly replaces it. After one home laundry wash, the garment feels 100% completely soft.
