A Pre-Production Sample (PPS) is the critical "golden sample" manufactured by an apparel factory right before mass production is authorized. Unlike early design prototypes made from substitute cloth, the PPS is sewn using the actual dyed bulk fabric roll, final 1x1 Lycra collar ribs, production DTF/screen inks, and branded neck tags. The buyer inspects the PPS for fit, seam tensile strength, and color fidelity. Once signed and sealed, one physical PPS remains with the buyer and one with the factory floor master as the definitive benchmark to resolve quality disputes.
The Golden Sample Protocol: Protecting Your Capital
In wholesale garment manufacturing, approving bulk production based only on digital computer mockups is the fastest way to lose capital. Digital screens emit light, while physical fabric absorbs it. A digital print proof cannot reveal if the collar ribbing twists, whether the seams rub abrasively against the skin, or if the fabric shrinks excessively in the dryer.
The Pre-Production Sample puts a physical garment in your hands. You test it, stretch it, wear it, and wash it. Once approved, the PPS becomes the legally binding quality contract: the mass consignment must match the approved PPS within certified commercial tolerances.
