Pre-Treatment is an aqueous chemical solution composed of multivalent calcium salts and binding polymers applied to cotton fabric before Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing. When aqueous white inkjet droplets strike the pre-treated fabric, the calcium ions instantly destabilize and coagulate the ink suspension, preventing the white ink from sinking into the fabric pores or mixing with the dyed cotton fibers. While essential for DTG, improper pre-treatment can cause yellow chemical stains or "pre-treatment halos" on pastel garments.
Why Industrial Apparel Moved from Liquid Pre-Treatment to Dry DTF
Liquid pre-treatment was the Achilles heel of direct garment printing for over a decade. If the operator sprayed 2 grams too much liquid, the garment developed permanent yellow staining under sunlight. If they sprayed 2 grams too little, the white ink washed off in the customer’s first laundry cycle.
Direct-to-Film (DTF) technology revolutionized the apparel industry by replacing volatile liquid pre-treatment with dry, precision-dusted hot-melt TPU adhesive powder. Because DTF bonds via melted polymer rather than chemical coagulation, it completely eliminates chemical pre-treatment halos and works flawlessly across cotton, polyester, and fleece.
