Decoding Yarn Count Numbers for Garment Brands
Many fashion founders confuse yarn count with GSM. GSM measures the overall weight of the fabric sheet, whereas Yarn Count measures the thickness of the individual threads used to knit that sheet.
• 20s Yarn (Heavy Gauge): Thick, robust yarn. When knitted on a 24-gauge circular machine, it yields 220 to 240 GSM fabric with dense weight and boxy streetwear drape.
• 24s Yarn (Balanced Industry Benchmark): The sweet-spot yarn count used by top international brands. Knits into 180 to 200 GSM classic retail tees that balance breathability with high opacity.
• 30s to 32s Yarn (Fine Luxury Gauge): Micro-fine yarn requiring long-staple cotton. Knits into ultra-soft, smooth 150 to 170 GSM fabric with a silky drape.
